Das britische DVD-Label Eureka kündigt, im Rahmen seiner "Masters of Cinema"-Reihe, für Juni 2005 die Veröffentlichung von Shohei Imamuras VENGEANCE IS MINE an. Bislang mußte man hier auf die R3 Veröffentlichung von Panorama(HK) zurückgreifen, welche den Film zwar im korrekten Format präsentierte, aber auch durch ein äußerst verpixeltes Bild auffiel.




Der komplette Releaseplan kann hier abgerufen werden. Man darf sich u.a. auf Editionen von Kaneto Shindos wunderbarem Schauerstück KURONEKO, Rossellinis FRANCESCO GIULLARE DI DIO und Sadao Yamanakas äußerst selten zu sehenden HUMANITY AND PAPER BALLOONS freuen.

Re-release for a key Japanese work from 1979 – still shocking, still striking and a notable influence upon the now unavoidable serial killer case study movie, as well as the current thriller and horror output from Japan and South Korea.

The source for the film was the true story of Iwao Enokizu, a con artist and multiple murderer played here by Ken Ogawa. Blank, impassive and unassuming enough to pass by Wanted posters bearing his own image without being spotted, Enokizu undertakes his grisly crimes with a strange off-handedness – pausing after one murder to pluck some fruit from a tree.

The film shares his coldness: its absence of hysterical emotion denies it a comforting moral centre, and contributes to its uniquely creepy and unpredictable atmosphere. Sometimes it stirs with the beauty of its compositions; sometimes it raises a guilty laugh; sometimes, it's flat-out terrifying. Its unconventional structure and jittery mood also deny the vicarious pleasure of suspense – no Hitchcockian manipulation or illicit sadistic thrills are offered up here, just a flat account of a prolonged and horrific crime spree. Ethical judgments are left up to the viewer; the film simply analyses, at a chilly, questioning distance, the presence within a society of those to whom the feelings of others mean nothing – and the degree to which such extreme character traits are latent within other, supposedly normal members of the community.

Also ich würd mal ganz genrell n dickes Lob für die MoC-Reihe aussprechen. Bislang nur Volltreffer gelandet!

MoC betreffend freue ich mich besonders auf die kommende Mikio Naruse - Box (Inhalt: "Meshi", "Nagareru" und "Yama no oto"). Zwei der drei Filme kenn' ich zwar schon, aber es ist schön, dass überhaupt mal jemand etwas von Naruse bringt. Und vielleicht springen ja andere auf den Zug auf...

Ja, den „Ukigumo“ würde ich in der Liste der Filme, die ich vom Naruse kenn‘, auch weiter unten ansiedeln. Zeitweise fand ich den mit seiner depressiven Untergangsstimmung schon recht bedrückend und gelungen, aber es fehlte ein wenig der Rhythmus, das wirkte manchmal schon recht monoton und die flashbacks schienen auch recht lustlos eingesetzt. Kommt, meiner Meinung nach, weder an das kompakte und (emotional) viel leichter zugängliche Meisterwerk „Okaasan“, noch an spätere wunderschön fotografierte Scope Sachen wie „Musume tsuma haha“ heran.

scheint so als würde die MOC der ohnehin nicht ganz optimalen Criterion ordentlich in den Hintern treten hier der Vergleich von DvdBeaver.

Ich schätze, die werden drauf sein. Denn ansonsten, denke ich, wird es nicht so elendig viel Material von Laloux geben, dass man da draufknallen könnte. Und Audiokommentar-technisch geht da ja leider auch nichts mehr.

Ich schätze, die werden drauf sein. Denn ansonsten, denke ich, wird es nicht so elendig viel Material von Laloux geben, dass man da draufknallen könnte. Und Audiokommentar-technisch geht da ja leider auch nichts mehr.

Eine DVD von Laloux´Herrscher der Zeit wäre ja auch mal ganz nett.
