Ich hätte zwar viel lieber "Il quarto animale" ( ) gesehen, aber vielleicht kann Argento mal wieder überzeugen.
Und mit Hilfe eines Mayors könnte er möglicherweise all seine Ideen auf hohem Niveau verwirklichen ... soviel Gore gab es bei seinen Hexenfilmen ja sowieso nicht.

THE MOTHER OF TEARS: Genre screenwriters Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson (of Tobe Hooper's TOOLBOX MURDERS, CROCODILE and upcoming MORTUARY) have been tapped by director Dario Argento to pen the final film of the Three Mothers trilogy that began with SUSPIRIA and INFERNO. Speaking exclusively to Fangoria, the duo further reveal that the project, previously reported to be titled THE THIRD MOTHER, is in fact called MATER LACHRYMARUM (Latin for THE MOTHER OF TEARS).

"We just returned from three weeks in Rome writing the first draft of the film, based on Dario's original story," reports Anderson, who goes on to explain how she and Gierasch became involved with the project: "We met Dario - as fans! - while he was in Los Angeles editing his MASTERS OF HORROR episode JENIFER. After speaking with Dario, he was interested in reading one of our scripts - and after he did, he asked us if we would like to do a treatment of MATER LACHRYMARUM! His brother Claudio then asked us to come to Rome. It was intense! Dario is such a sweet man. It was wonderful!"

Mirroring Anderson's enthusiasm, Gierasch says, "Dario is the most amazing director, period, regardless of genre." " So we spent our time working with Dario [on the script] in Rome," Anderson continues. "It was important for him that we do it there. He wanted us to soak up the atmosphere, the catacombs, etc., since the film will be shot exclusively there."

Regarding the subject matter of MATER LACHRYMARUM, Gierasch doesn't reveal plot particulars, but does promise, "It's fast-paced, and more violent than you can shake a stick at! This is a horror movie, plain and simple. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of murders! It really wraps up the trilogy, but is quite different from the first two. Dario didn’t want to do the same thing again. "I think it's really going to be the movie that everyone is hoping for," Gierasch concludes. "It's a 'wow' kind of film, from the very first scene." The Mother of Tears will take up from where Inferno left off, with one of the witches who survived the destruction of the New York house watching an inspector in charge of investigating a series of mysterious murders at a university.

Written by Dario, with the participation of Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, and produced by Medusa with American co-funding, the film will star Ennio Fantastichini in the role of the detective, Chiara Caselli as a psychiatrist, Max Von Sydow as a university professor with a mysterious past, and the young Giordano Petri as the investigator who takes charge of the inquiry when Fantastichini's character is killed.

"Hi, Nick. Just back from Cannes where I picked up the MOTHER OF TEARS script. And you know something it�s actually very good. The credits on the screenplay read Jace Anderson, Dario Argento and Adam Gierasch in that order. I have no intention of revealing anything too major in the following synopsis so you don�t need to worry.

Set in modern-day Rome, it begins with the church grave of legendary occult fighter Oscar de la Vallee being unearthed by bulldozers. Chained to the coffin by crucifixes is an urn that is sent to Rome museum art restoration student Sarah Mandy (Sienna Miller in talks to play the part according to Cannes hype).

Unsealing the urn with her friend Giselle she finds a red satin robe encrusted with jewels, a golden dagger and three demonic terracotta figures. They all belong to the Mother of Tears (Mater Lachrymarum as per De Quincey, spelt Lachrimarum in the script) reborn through Giselle cutting her finger while opening up the urn. The three deformed demons spring to life and eviscerate Giselle, garrotting her with her own intestines, in a spectacular set piece clearly meant to rival the SUSPIRIA opening.

This puts Sarah on the run from occult forces through a panic-stricken Rome, awash in a rash of crime and suicides, to uncover the truth about her mysterious spiritual past, and face the cruellest Mother of all at the vast Palazzo Varelli. The story is full of marvellous moments (the Mother of Tears bleeds jewels that scorch the skin), outrageous gore (one character becomes a demonic buffet while still alive, someone gets chopped pieces, assorted deaths by medieval torture instruments) and terrific special effects (the Mother licking the tears off crying faces with a giant tongue, Sarah�s guardian angel appearing in powder blown from a compact).

It connects to SUSPIRIA and INFERNO in very intriguing ways � the Tanz Akademie students, ornate wall decorations revealing secret passages, and the pivotal clue �What you see doesn�t exist and what you can�t see is truth�. And there�s even a crazed PHENOMENA monkey too!

What really scares me about the picture is its sheer scale. Although it�s now an Italian Medusa and Myriad Pictures co-production (the latter American company made JEEPERS CREEPERS 2 and the current FACTORY GIRL � with Sienna Miller), it�s going to need a lot of money behind it. There�s an elaborate animated ancient text sequence for a start, not to mention the huge Cinecitta sets, and many (Sergio Stivalettii?) scenes that will require extensive CGI augmentation � psychic hallucinations, the demons, a flaming telephone cable stretching for miles, the number of extras involved from the covens of witches gathering in Rome to the ultimate orgy.

None of this is going to be cheap and it will all have to look as epic and gorgeous as the two prior films in the trilogy. Despite a rather formula narrative � every time Sarah is given vital information the informant is horrifically killed in the next scene � the set pieces are just incredible. My favourite being the MOT walking down a wall as her bejewelled robe casts primary colour reflections on her amassed worshippers. Oh dear, I�m getting quite excited about the MOTHER OF TEARS. All the material is definitely there, lets hope Dario can pull his long-awaited sequel off."

Dario Argento’s ‘La terza madre’ – News and Spoilers

Despite the harsh criticism his last movies received by Italian critics, Dario Argento is still being given a coverage by Italian media, which are incoherently and blindly attacking his movies while praising him as a renowned master of horror. In their recent appearance on prime-time Italian television, Dario and Asia Argento just chatted and joked with their host, as Argento expressed some of his already known anger towards Italian directors and critics. But in an interview appeared yesterday on the Italian newspaper “Il Corriere della Sera”, Argento revealed some details about his upcoming movie, La terza madre (The Mother of Tears), the last chapter of the trilogy started by Suspiria and continued by Inferno.

Shooting in Rome is reported as finished now, while the crew moved to Turin for a two-weeks schedule. Here, Argento was reached while rehearsing a scene involving Philippe Leroy as an old alchemist revealing the Three Mothers history to the young Asia. Reportedly, also rehearsed was a scene where Asia’s eyelids get propped open by Leroy with a painful looking device.

Argento also talked about the death of Leroy’s character (eaten by witches) and scenes comprising witches flying over Rome in an apocalyptic and chaotic Sabbath, with hundreds of deaths.

Mir reicht schon, dass er nach CARDPLAYER und DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK? endlich mal wieder was mit einem phantastischem Element macht. Der Trailer haut mich jetzt zwar auch nicht wirklich um, aber es gibt schlimmeres. So einen richtigen Knaller, würde ich dem Dario auf seine alten Tage aber auf jeden Fall gönnen. Warten und Hoffen ist angesagt.

Weil ich SLEEPLESS so unendlich schlimm fand, dass ich ihn nicht für einen unglücklichen Unfall halten kann. Das Erlebnis dieser Sichtung stellt die wohl schlimmste Enttäuschung und Desillusionierung dar, die mir ein Film jemals beschert hat. Ich behalte Argento lieber durch seine alten Filme in guter Erinnerung, als dass ich mich noch einmal einer solchen Pein aussetze.

SLEEPLESS fand ich noch verhältnismäßig ok - besonders, wenn man sich vor Augen hält, was danach noch alles folgen sollte. Meiner Meinung hatte Argento seinen Höhepunkt mit TERROR IN DER OPER erreicht.

Auf das neue Projekt bin ich trotzdem gespannt. Auch wg. der Aussichtslosigkeit, die damit verbunden ist. Argento tritt immerhin gegen seinen eigenen Mythos an.

Puh, echt? Ich habe "Sleepless" zwar erst einmal gesehen (die letzten beiden noch gar nicht), muss aber sagen, dass er mir retrospektiv im Vergleich zu seinen unmittelbar zuvor entstandenen Filmen auch nicht wesentlich schlechter vorkommt.
Na, du wirst deine Gründe haben.

Ich warte noch halbwegs freudig auf die dritte Mutter, möglicherweise kommt damit auch bei mir die Frustration. Hoffentlich aber nicht.

Das PHANTOM war der erste Argento, den ich im Kino gesehen habe, was ein tolles Erlebnis war: Ich wusste noch nicht mal von der Existenz des Filmes und dann lief der plötzlich bei uns in Krefeld im Kino. Kann sein, dass ich SLEEPLESS ohne diese Verklärung anders (sprich: besser) gefunden hätte. So aber leider nicht. Seitdem habe ich von allem, was von ihm danach rauskam, Abstand genommen.
